A Whatcom man was booked on a charge of second-degree rape for an incident on April 24 in the Custer area.

The man, 36-year-old Lenell Ryan Stanford from Blaine, told sheriff’s deputies the encounter was consensual although the night was “fuzzy” for him because he had been drinking heavily, Whatcom Sheriff’s Office public information officer Deb Slater told The Bellingham Herald in an email.

He was taken into custody without incident on April 26. Bail is set for $20,000 or $2,000 cash. He has been bonded out of custody.
