It’s a fairy-tale ending after some bad actors stole from troupe at Whatcom school

A Bellingham nonprofit made sure that the show will go on after some bad actors stole costumes for kids participating in a performance by a renowned children’s theater troupe at Skyline Elementary School in Ferndale.

Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth provided costumes for two performances of “Rumpelstiltskin” with the Missoula Children’s Theatre slated for Friday, April 14, and Saturday, April 15, said Ferndale spokesman Riley Sweeney.

“BAAY is our superhero and they were so kind to help us out,” Sweeney told The Bellingham Herald in an email.

Two duffel bags containing costumes for children participating in a performance of the Grimm’s fairy tale were stolen from a Missoula Children’s Theatre truck on Thursday, April 13, according to a Facebook post by the Ferndale Police Department.

Replacement value of the costumes wasn’t high, police said.

“Rather than press charges, everyone involved would appreciate it if they were simply returned so that the kids can wear them for (Friday’s) performance of Rumpelstiltskin,” police said.

The stolen bags are black or navy and have “RS” printed on them, police said.

“If you know anything about this, please encourage the bags to be returned to Skyline Elementary as quickly as possible,” the Facebook post said.

Missoula Children’s Theatre is an international touring company whose interactive performances are designed to foster creativity and love for the arts in children.

They’ve performed at the Mount Baker Theatre and in many Whatcom County schools.

Performances are scheduled next week at Harmony Elementary near Nugents Corner and in May at Assumption Catholic School in Bellingham.
