The Arne Hanna Aquatic Center in Bellingham was closed Thursday, April 6, after a death occurred inside one of the facility bathrooms.

Bellingham Police Department officers and members of the Bellingham Fire Department responded to a call from the center at about 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, for a medical assistance request, according to Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy.

Responders were told a person was behind a bathroom door in the facility’s front public restroom for a couple of hours and needed medical attention. When officers and medics arrived, the bathroom door was open and an unresponsive man was inside.

Medics were unable to resuscitate the man, whose identity has not been released by police. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Murphy told The Bellingham Herald.

The Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the manner and cause of death after conducting an autopsy and toxicology screening.

The Aquatic Center was closed on Thursday and is expected to reopen for regular operating hours on Friday, April 7, according to Murphy.

The Arne Hanna Aquatic Center is located at 1114 Potter St.
