No injuries after car slides into Bellingham school bus during morning snow

The Bellingham Herald

Some Whatcom Middle School students were late to school Tuesday morning after a vehicle collided with a Bellingham Public Schools bus on Sunset Drive.

“It wasn’t a major accident and nobody came close to getting hurt,” Bellingham Public Schools spokesperson Dana Smith said in a telephone interview with The Bellingham Herald.

The accident was a result of the other driver sliding into the school bus, according to Smith.

The driver of the other vehicle was cooperative and followed Bellingham Public Schools’ incident procedures. Police responded to the collision to assist, which is required by the state any time there is damage to a school bus, Smith told The Herald.

Families of students on the bus route were notified after the collision via the messaging system ParentSquare.

“Any time an incident happens with a bus, we follow a very standard series of protocols,” Smith said.

No injuries were reported. The collision caused minor damage to the bus, which was driven back to the bus garage for inspection and repair.

The students were safely transported to Whatcom Middle School on a different bus. No students were marked absent or tardy.

Classes started normally in Bellingham schools Tuesday morning, but buses were on snow routes.
