It’s definitely going to snow in Whatcom. The question is, how much?

At least a few inches of snow is likely for Bellingham and the Whatcom County lowlands as a late-winter cold snap sweeps across Western Washington.

But how much snow and how long it will remain is still a question, said Kayla Mazurkiewicz, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Seattle.

“It’s definitely too far away to nail that particular detail. It’s all about how much moisture we’re going to get,” Mazurkiewicz told The Bellingham Herald.

Timing on the snowfall is fairly certain because a frigid Fraser outflow will kick up on Tuesday, Feb. 21, with snow likely to start that evening and continue into Wednesday, Feb. 22, according to current forecasts.

Daytime temperatures will struggle to reach 40 degrees starting Tuesday, with overnight lows in the 20s.

Snow showers could continue through Thursday, Feb. 23, Mazurkiewicz said in the online forecast discussion.

“(Forecast models) show up to a couple of inches of snow for much of the area Tuesday night and Wednesday but there is a lot of spread and uncertainty this far out. Snow showers should mostly end by Thursday as the upper low and associated moisture pulls away,” she said.
