A fire consumed several RVs or travel trailers in a rural area north of Ferndale, part of an encampment of temporary dwellings where the residents had been recently asked to leave.

No injuries were reported in the fire that started about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, said Chief Mark Billmire of the Lynden Fire Department.

“It was a cluster of about three or four of them that were like a camp,” Billmire said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, and a financial loss estimate was difficult because of the age of the RVs or trailers and the damage caused by the blaze, Billmire said.

He said the property had changed hands recently and the occupants had been evicted.

It took the effort of five engine companies and three water supply trucks called tenders from three fire agencies to bring the fire under control.

Units remained at the site until well after midnight and firefighters returned the next morning because debris continued to smolder, Billmire said.
