Whatcom Humane Society welcomes pups and their people at Dog Days festival
The Whatcom Humane Society’s annual Dog Days of Summer Festival on Sunday, Aug. 28, was a lot bigger than last year’s event.
This event, originally held at Lake Padden, moved to the nine-acre field behind the Whatcom Humane Society.
“We have 70 volunteers for this, which is incredible,” said Auna Carter, an employee of Whatcom Humane Society. “We tried to do something virtual over the COVID pandemic, but it didn’t work very well.”
With more than 30 vendors and a multitude of activities, people came from all over Whatcom County with their dogs to enjoy games, dog contests, agility courses and treats for everyone. Contests included dog/owner musical chairs, so ugly you’re cute, best bark/howl, best kisser and best tail/body wag.
“I would say this is the biggest event of the year (we have) for the community,” Carter said. “We’re planning on doing this for years to come and want people to continue coming and bringing their dogs.”
Carter said next year Whatcom Humane Society hopes to get more animal vendors and more booths for animal rescues in the area.
“We partner with a lot of rescues and it would be nice to have booths for them here where they can showcase animals that are available for adoption,” Carter said. “They could bring some animals we’ve sent to them and animals they’ve sent to us.”
