Fire destroys one Bellingham mobile home near Bellis Fair mall, damages two others
One mobile home was destroyed and two others were damaged in a fire Tuesday at a Bellingham mobile home park near Bellis Fair mall.
Units were first called at 7:53 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, to a unit in the Bakerview Estates mobile home park off Eliza Avenue, according to the PulsePoint app.
Though the initial cost was for a smoke investigation, Bellingham Fire Department Assistant Chief Dave Pethick said the call was soon upgraded to a structure fire.
The first firefighters on the scene found one mobile home fully involved with fire, Pethick reported, while flames threatened to spread to two others on either side.
“Crews worked heavily on both exposures,” Pethick said. “One had pretty heavy damage while the other more minor damage. Four people were displaced and are working with the Red Cross.”
The mobile home where the fire originated had a lot of personal belongings, Pethick reported, which fueled the fire.
“The wind also was a little bit challenging, and so was water supply in the area,” Pethick said.
Firefighters from North Whatcom Fire and Rescue and Whatcom County Fire District 7 (Ferndale) assisted the Bellingham Fire Department, as did Bellingham Public Works, which brought out an excavator to help make sure the fire was completely extinguished in the unit where the fire originated, Pethick said.
No residents were injured in the fire, according to Pethick, though one firefighter was placed under observation for overexertion from the incident.
Pethick also said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
