Lynden farm fined for repeated violations, Ecology report says
A Whatcom County farm has been fined for repeated discharges of contaminated water, according to the state Department of Ecology’s report on penalties issue for the second quarter of 2022.
Snow Farm in Lynden was fined $3,000 in April, Ecology said in a statement issued Thursday, Aug. 4.
“Since 2019, Ecology has documented bacteria-contaminated water being discharged from the property,” the statement said.
Fecal coliform was identified as the pollutant, but its source wasn’t determined, Ecology spokeswoman Scarlett Tang.
Tang told The Bellingham Herald that the farm’s owners, Kevin and Cynthia Snow, were appealing the fine.
Efforts to reach them were unsuccessful.
“Ecology contacted the landowner on multiple occasions to inform him about water-quality issues and best management practices. The discharges continued, and a penalty was issued,” the statement said.
No further information was available about the farm or the fine, including the type of bacteria and where the water was discharged.
Ecology issued $631,000 in penalties of $1,000 or more from April through June.
