Bellingham man dies after being trapped in apartment fire Thursday morning

A fire that entrapped a man in his Bellingham apartment Thursday morning proved to be fatal.

The man, who was in his 40s, died before he could be airlifted to the burn unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Bellingham Fire Department Captain Dustin Michaelis told The Bellingham Herald Friday, July 1.

Firefighters were called at 6:07 a.m. Thursday, June 30, to the 3500 block of Northwest Avenue for the report of a residential fire, according to the PulsePoint app.

The initial report also said somebody was entrapped, Michaelis said.

The man was quickly taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Bellingham, but later died from his injuries, Michaelis reported.

Investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire, Michaelis reported.

No other injuries from the fire were reported.

Bellingham firefighters were called to three fatal fires in 2021 and two in 2020, The Herald’s archives show.

According to the latest Fire in Washington report from 2020, there were 75 fire fatalities reported to the State Fire Marshal’s Office in 2020, the highest total reported in the past decade.
