It’s an opportunity to ‘learn ways to be truly inclusive’ of BIPOC in Whatcom County

A Day of Uplifting Black, Indigenous and People of Color Within Whatcom County is planned for Sunday afternoon in downtown Bellingham.

“This event is an opportunity to learn ways to be truly inclusive of Black, Indigenous and People of Color in our community,” a flyer about the event stated.

The event is 2-6 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at Depot Market Square, 1100 Railroad Ave.

It’s sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Bellingham-Whatcom County. Shovia Muchirawehondo, chair of the Racial Equity and Democracy Issues Team, will lead participants in an afternoon of cultural festivities according to a news release on the group’s website.

“Participants will be able to circulate among tables hosted by various groups working to increase civil discourse. Professionals on race and communication will be available to chat with folks who may want to better understand how to engage in courageous conversations about race,” the release states.

The event, “an opportunity to listen, live, learn and explore,” will feature live music and dance performances and food that represents diverse communities.
