Bellingham resident airlifted, 3 others hospitalized after 3-car crash near Rhody Cafe
A Bellingham woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and three other Bellingham residents were hospitalized following a three-car crash in Skagit County in front of The Rhody Cafe.
The 49-year-old Bellingham woman was airlifted with injuries she suffered when the car she was a passenger in was struck after failing to yield the right of way at the intersection of Chuckanut Drive and Bow Hill Road Wednesday evening, June 8, according to the Washington State Patrol release on the crash.
Traffic in the area was impacted for approximately three hours following the crash, according to tweets by Trooper Jacob Kennett.
At approximately 6:09 p.m. Wednesday, a gray 2011 BMW 535 was stopped at a stop sign on eastbound Bow Hill Road at the intersection with Chuckanut Drive, according to the release, while a green 2004 Chevrolet Silverado was stopped on westbound Bow Hill Road at the intersection.
At the time, a 2021 Volvo XC40 was approaching the intersection northbound on Chuckanut Drive, according to the release.
The BMW pulled into the intersection and struck the passing Volvo, pushing it into the Chevrolet, according to the release.
Kennett’s tweets on the incident called the injuries suffered by the Bellingham woman “serious.”
In addition to her injuries, a 61-year-old Bellingham man who was driving the BMW and a 30-year-old man from Bellingham who also was a passenger in the BMW were taken to Skagit Valley Hospital with injuries, as was a 51-year-old Bellingham woman who was driving the Volvo, according to the release. A 62-year-old Bow man who was driving the Chevrolet did not suffer any injuries that required hospitalization.
All five people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts at the time, according to the release, and drugs nor alcohol were not suspected. The cause of the crash was listed as failure to yield right of way in the release.
