Last night’s 3.6-magnitude quake near Oso reportedly felt in Whatcom County

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake rattled approximately 40 miles southeast of downtown Bellingham shortly after midnight Tuesday, May 17, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

As of Tuesday morning, one person in southern Whatcom County had reported feeling the shaking to the USGS, and a total of 148 reports had been submitted on the “Did You Feel It?” page.

The quake hit at 12:07 a.m. Tuesday, according to the USGS, approximately 4.4 miles northeast of Oso or 22 miles southeast of Sedro-Woolley.

The quake was measured 3.6 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface, according to the USGS. There were not reports of damage from the shaking.

Quakes between magnitude 3.0 and 3.9 are considered minor, but are often felt by people.
