Here’s how food staple prices stack up at Bellingham grocery stores in May

With food prices rising, The Bellingham Herald compares prices for staples online at local stores monthly to identify low prices.

Food prices have continued to climb in February and March world wide, as food price index averaged 159.3 points in March, a 12.6% jump from February which was the highest point level since 1990, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Here’s what prices we found at Bellingham grocery stores Friday, May 6:

Gallon of milk

A gallon of Fred Meyer’s 1% milk is $3.09, up from $2.99 last month.

Safeway’s Value Corner 1% milk is $3.39 a gallon, up from $2.99 last month.

Walmart’s Great Value 1% milk is $3.19, the same price as last month.

Dozen eggs

The price for a dozen eggs varies depending on egg size, grade and color.

Fred Meyer has Kroger Grade AA Large Eggs for $1.69 a dozen, the same price as last month.

Safeway’s Lucerne Farms large eggs are $1.99 a dozen, up from $1.69 last month.

Walmart’s Great Value grade AA large eggs are $1.43 a dozen, down from $1.59 last month.

Sandwich bread

Sandwich bread prices vary by weight and types of wheat.

Fred Meyer has a 20-ounce loaf of Kroger Enriched White Bread for $1.49, up from $1.33 last month.

Safeway’s 16-ounce Value Corner Bread loaf is $1.19, the same price as last month.

Walmart’s 20-ounce loaf of white sandwich bread is 93 cents, the same price as last month.

Cheerios cereal

At Fred Meyer, 8.9-ounce boxes of Cheerios are $3.69 a box, the same price as last month.

Bellingham’s Safeway has Cheerios for $4.79 for an 8.9-ounce box, the same price as last month.

Walmart has Cheerios for $3.28 for an 8.9-ounce box, the same price as last month.

Chicken breast

We compared the prices of frozen, boneless chicken breast.

At Fred Meyer, Kroger Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts with Rib Meat is $10.99 for three pounds, weighing in at $3.66 a pound, up from $9.99 last month.

Safeway has 2.5 lb bags of frozen boneless skinless chicken breast for $10.49, $4.20 a pound, the same price as last month.

Walmart has Great Value Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast for $9.94, weighing in at $3.31 a pound, the same price as last month.
