Drive I-5, Bakerview, Mount Baker Highway? Here’s what will slow you down this week
Lanes of Interstate 5 and some access ramps in Whatcom County will be closed this week, affecting both daily commutes and evening drives, the Washington State Department of Transportation said in its weekly summary.
Some of the I-5 work is to remove debris that built up along the freeway shoulder during winter, WSDOT said in a statement:
▪ From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 9, the right lane of southbound I-5 will close between Birch Bay Lynden Road (milepost 270) and Grandview Road (milepost 267).
▪ From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, the right lane of southbound I-5 will close between Zell Road (milepost 268) and just north of Portal Way.
▪ From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, the right lane of southbound I-5 will close from just south of Portal Way to Main Street (milepost 262).
▪ From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12, the left lane of southbound I-5 will close from Portal Way to Slater Road (milepost 260).
Night work is scheduled on Bakerview Road near the new northbound freeway access ramps and on the southbound off-ramp at Bakerview.
With the National Weather Service forecast for Bellingham calling for a chance of rain or showers daily through Thursday, WSDOT noted the road work is weather dependent.
▪ From 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, May 9, through Thursday, May 12, a single lane in each direction of Bakerview Road will be closed.
▪ From 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, and Wednesday, May 11, the southbound I-5 off-ramp at Bakerview Road in Bellingham will be closed for striping. Travelers can exit I-5 at Slater Road or Northwest Avenue during the closure.
For drivers on the Mount Baker Highway, eastbound and westbound traffic at the north fork of the Nooksack River near Nugents Corner will alternate through a single lane for routine bridge maintenance from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 11.
