The former Georgia-Pacific mill pier will remain closed to the public the night of July 4.
The Port of Bellingham opened the pier to the public in 2013 and 2014 for fireworks viewing, but a recent engineering study said the structure needs work.
Though putting about 500 people on the pier probably would be fine, port staff opted not to take any risks and will not open the property up this year, Port Executive Director Rob Fix said.
The Port Commission will soon need to decide what to do with the pier. Plans already call for it to be removed during future work on the polluted waterfront site.

The port still will co-host the Haggen Family 4th of July Celebration at Zuanich Point Park that runs all day until the fireworks show over the waterfront.
