Bellingham airport crews go on emergency standby as small plane experiences radio problems

Bellingham International Airport emergency crews were put on standby after a small, private, twin-engine airplane with up to five people aboard experienced radio difficulties Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency crews at the airport and Bellingham Fire Department were called for an Aircraft Emergency Standby at 3:48 p.m. March 16, according to the PulsePoint app.

That was required after a general aviation Aero Commander aircraft experienced radio communication difficulties with the air traffic control tower at the airport at approximately 3:27 p.m., resulting in a precautionary Alert 1, Port of Bellingham Director of Aviation Sunil Harman told The Bellingham Herald in an email Thursday, March 17.

“The Control Tower was able to communicate with the aircraft with backup light signals and the aircraft landed and taxied off the airfield to park without incident,” Harman wrote.

Three or four passengers and the pilot were aboard at the time, Harman reported, and the incident created no disruptions to other general aviation or commercial operations at Bellingham International.
