Bellingham pedestrian critically injured in crash while trying to cross Lakeway Monday
A man in his 60s was critically injured Monday night after he reportedly attempted to cross Lakeway Drive in Bellingham outside a crosswalk and was hit by a passing car.
The Bellingham Police and Fire Departments were called at approximately 7:21 p.m. Feb. 21 to the 2400 block of Lakeway Drive, near the intersection with Yew Street, for the report of a collision involving a pedestrian, Lt. Claudia Murphy told The Bellingham Herald in an email Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 22.
Officers spoke to the driver of the car, and the pedestrian, who had been walking, was taken to the hospital, Murphy reported.
The initial investigation by police showed that the pedestrian was crossing Lakeway just east of Yew Street, heading from south to north, according to Murphy. The pedestrian also was wearing all dark clothing and not using the crosswalk, Murphy reported.
The car was traveling eastbound, and the driver reported not being able to see the pedestrian until he was right in front of the car, and the driver was unable to avoid him, according to Murphy.
Neither the pedestrian’s nor the driver’s identity were released by police.
Bellingham Police tweeted that Lakeway was closed in both directions while officer investigated the crash Monday night.
