UPDATE: No injuries after man reportedly drives truck into Squalicum Harbor on purpose

The Bellingham Fire Department was called to Squalicum Harbor for a water rescue after a truck reportedly was in the water at a boat ramp Monday morning.

Rescue crews were called to the 1800 block of Roeder Avenue at 9:58 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, for the water rescue, according to the PulsePoint app.

Witnesses told police that they saw a man drive the truck to the boat launch, get out and walk away, allowing the truck to roll into the bay, Lt. Claudia Murphy told The Bellingham Herald in an email. The man walked away on Roeder as the truck rolled until becoming fully submerged in water.

U.S. Coast Guard and fire crews made sure nobody was in the truck, and after finding there wasn’t, the truck was removed from the bay, Murphy reported.

Police found the driver nearby, according to Murphy, and he was taken into protective custody to get behavioral health help.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, Murphy reported, but the truck was a total loss.
