Bellingham Fire Department assists in ‘doggone great outcome for both dog and people’

The Bellingham Fire Department made an unusual rescue on Monday, Jan. 24, after a dog got stuck approximately 30 feet down a culvert in Lake Whatcom Park.

The crew from Engine 4 assisted the Whatcom County Parks Department and Whatcom Humane society in the rescue of Guinness the dog, according to a Facebook post by the fire department.

“A doggone great outcome for both dog and people,” the Whatcom Humane Society said in its own Facebook post about the rescue, giving “Two paws up” to all involved.

Guinness got stuck approximately 30 feet down a 100-foot-long culvert near the top of Chanterelle Trail in Lake Whatcom Park, fire department spokesperson Dustin Michaelis told The Bellingham Herald on Friday.

“We were able to to tie some ropes to a blanket and push the blanket down to the dog,” Michaelis told The Herald. “The dog was smart enough to jump on the blanket and get pulled out.”

Video of the rescue showed that after some coaxing the final few feet, the Guinness popped out of the culvert for a tail-wagging reunion with family and a chance to make some new friends with the rescuers.

According to the fire department’s post, Guinness was not hurt in the ordeal.

“It’s more relieving when you get to do something like that and get to help,” Michaelis said, adding he was unsure what type of dog Guinness is.
