Whatcom man hospitalized after head-on crash with semi along Birch Bay Lynden Road

A 28-year-old Blaine man was hospitalized and is suspected of reckless driving after he was involved in a head-on collision with a semi truck Sunday evening in Whatcom County.

Birch Bay Lynden Road between Bob Hall Road and Berthusen Road remained closed early Monday, Jan. 10, because of the crash, according to a Facebook post by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

Akash Kumar was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Bellingham after the black 2019 Toyota C-HR he was driving struck the semi being driven by a 53-year-old from British Columbia, according to the Washington State Patrol report on the crash.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:55 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, according to the report, after Kumar’s Toyota, which was traveling eastbound along Lynden Birch Bay Road, crossed over the center line and struck the westbound semi head-on.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, according to the report, and the driver of the semi was not seriously injured.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected in the incident, which remains under investigation, but the report said that Kumar would be charged with reckless driving.

According to the sheriff’s office post, the road was expected to re-open between 8 and 9 a.m. Monday.
