Bellingham police and fire respond to crash that kills two people on Lakeway
Bellingham Police and Fire crews responded to a fatal traffic crash that resulted in the deaths of two people Sunday evening on Lakeway Drive near Bayview Cemetery.
According to the Bellingham Police Department’s incident log, the fatal collision occurred at 7:05 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, in the 2700 block of Lakeway Drive.
The crash involved two cars, Bellingham Fire Department spokesperson Dave Pethick told The Bellingham Herald, and two people were trapped in one of the cars.
Those two people died at the scene, Pethick reported.
A third person was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Bellingham using basic lifesaving services.
According to unconfirmed emergency radio broadcasts at the time, the two cars involved were a 2009 Nissan Altima and a 2004 Chevy Suburban.
Pethick said the two people who died were in the same car, but that the report did not include information about which car they were in or any other identifying information, such as their age or gender.
“BPD Traffic and Patrol Divisions are currently investigating a very serious crash in the 2700 block of Lakeway Drive,” a Facebook post from the Bellingham Police at 8:37 p.m. read. “The eastbound lanes are closed at Yew Street. Please stay out of the area. It is unknown when the road will be open. Patience is requested.”
The Bellingham Herald has reached out to the police department for more information on the crash.
The fatal crash would be the seventh within Bellingham city limits so far this year, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation Crash Data Portal, and the 12th on Whatcom County roads. There were eight deadly crashes in Whatcom in 2020, and none within Bellingham.
South Whatcom Fire Authority also responded to the crash, Pethick reported.
