Whatcom County search team locates missing hiker/camper in North Cascades National Park
Volunteers from the Whatcom County Search and Rescue 4x4 unit successfully located a missing 21-year-old Seattle man who failed to return from a hiking and camping trip in North Cascades National Park over the weekend.
The volunteers responded Monday morning, Nov. 8, after friends notified the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office that the man was overdue, according to a sheriff’s office Facebook post.
The man had left detailed plans of his trip, including a description of his vehicle he was driving, with the friends, who were then able to give that information to the search and rescue team, according to the post.
With that information, the search team made quick work of locating the man, who was “cold, wet, and hungry, but otherwise OK,” according to the post.
“This serves as a great reminder to always check the weather forecast before you go,” the post read. “Approximately three feet of snow had fallen since Saturday, which contributed to the hiker not returning.
“Also, leave your itinerary and a description of your vehicle with friends or family and give them your schedule. Ask them to call 911 if you haven’t returned or checked in with them by a certain time.”
