Seventeen power outages reported in Whatcom County Friday evening

Seventeen power outages were reported in Whatcom County just after 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, according to the Puget Sound Energy outage map. More than 16,500 customers were impacted before most power was restored by 9 p.m.

A pole near Sumas and Lynden broke, causing the outage, a PSE spokeswoman said Saturday morning, Oct. 16. Power to all but several hundred customers was restored by 5 a.m., she said.

One of the outages, in Lynden, impacted 2,450 customers. In Bellingham’s Silver Beach area, more than 5,000 customers were impacted.

Power returned in the Barkley neighborhood just before 8 p.m.

Power was also reported out at the Mount Baker High School football stadium. About 250 people were gathered for the Mount Baker-Blaine game when the power failed 25 minutes before kickoff. The Mount Baker Sports Updates Facebook page posted that the game was rescheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.

The areas impacted were from Geneva and Wickersham in the south, Lynden and Bellingham’s Barkley neighborhood on the west, Glacier on the east and Sumas to the north.
