The Bellingham Fire Department responded to a four-car, chain-reaction crash with injuries that resulted in one car rolling on southbound Interstate 5 in Bellingham Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters were called at 1:31 p.m. Oct. 14 to the scene near the on-ramp from Ohio Street.

According to unconfirmed emergency broadcasts at the time, firefighters said two patients need to be taken to the hospital with injuries, one of them with advanced life support.

Washington State Department of Transportation cameras show a car on its side in the left lane of I-5 near the on-ramp. Cameras also show that traffic is working its way around the crash, using the on-ramp and shoulder.

Cameras also show southbound traffic is stopped beyond Sunset Drive, while northbound traffic is slowed beyond the Lakeway Drive exit.

According to tweets by Washington State Patrol Trooper Rocky Oliphant’s account, a small, red passenger car was getting on I-5 from Ohio Street, lost control and slid sideways.

A Whatcom Transportation Authority van, a Chevrolet Equinox and a semi-truck were unable to stop, resulting in a chain-reaction collision.

“Tows are on scene please be patient and slow down on the wet roadways as fall is here and so is the rain,” the tweet read.

The road was fully opened shortly after 3 p.m.
