Whatcom hunter rescued after being stranded by snowstorm near U.S.-Canada border
A 20-year-old Whatcom County man was rescued after he was stranded by a snowstorm in the Whatcom County wilderness near the U.S.-Canada border Tuesday evening, the Whatcom County Sheriff Office reported in a Facebook post.
Deputies responded to coordinate the search and rescue at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, according to the post.
The man was hunting in the Yellow Aster Butte area, when snow, freezing temperatures and low visibility made it impossible for him to navigate out of the area, the post stated.
The man activated his Garmin inReach device, allowing rescuers to pinpoint his location, according to the post.
Volunteers from the Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council responded to the area, along with an ambulance from Whatcom County Fire District 14, the post stated, and around midnight the team found the man.
After helping him warm up, the man was able to walk back to the trailhead unassisted, and he did not need any more medical treatment, according to the post.
“This is yet another great example of the cooperation between our rescue partners and local EMTs to bring incidents like this to a fast and positive conclusion,” the sheriff’s office post read.
