You may be able to see the Aurora Borealis from western Washington this week
The northern lights may be making an appearance across the U.S. early this week and should be visible in parts of Washington.
An aurora may be visible in many parts of western Washington across Monday night and Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service, Seattle. Peak hours of the aurora will be late Monday evening, Sept. 28, and early Tuesday morning. Sept. 29.
The lights are caused by geomagnetic solar storms, which have been observed on Friday, Sept, 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26. The storms have been minor but are expected to move to moderate activity by Tuesday. Auroras typically appear as green or red colored glows in the northern horizon and may be seen through clouds.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for partly cloudy skies for Sunday night, Sept. 27, before transitioning to mostly clear skies for the remainder of the week, ideal viewing conditions for people wishing to see the aurora.
