Vacant Whatcom County home suffers heavy damage in Monday morning fire

The front portion of a vacant double-wide mobile home in Maple Falls, including a covered deck and kitchen, were destroyed by fire early Monday morning.

Whatcom County Fire District 14 crews were called at 6:49 a.m. Aug. 31 to the 6200 block of Azure Way for the report of a structure fire, according to the PulsePoint app.

“The first engine on scene found the whole front end fully involved,” Chief Jerry Debruin told The Bellingham Herald. “There was a deck or covered porch out front and a kitchen where flames were coming from.”

Firefighters had to battle the fire from outside before more crews arrived and they were able to transition and attack from inside, DeBruin said. Complicating issues was a large amount of personal belongings inside and outside the home.

Though the heaviest damage was in the front of the home, Debruin said the back half also suffered heat and smoke damage.

Firefighters were told the residents had vacated the home a few days earlier, Debruin said, but it was unclear under what circumstances.

The Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire, Debruin said.
