Whatcom firefighters keep Thursday morning barn fire from spreading to other buildings

A Whatcom County barn filled with hay along Noon Road was a total loss Thursday morning when it caught fire, but firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to anything else.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue, along with crews from Lynden and Whatcom County Fire Districts 1 and 7, responded at 5:09 a.m. Aug. 27 to the fire in the 6700 block of Noon Road, according to the PulsePoint app.

“The fire was defensive in nature,” North Whatcom Fire Chief Jason VanderVeen told The Bellingham Herald. “It was fully involved already when crews arrived.”

Crews’ main concern, VanderVeen said, was keeping flames from spreading to other nearby structures, including a shop located 15 to 20 feet away. Those efforts were successful.

The estimated 100- by 40-foot barn was two-thirds full of stacked hay, VanderVeen said, though some cars and other household items were in the barn. Crews will remain on scene Thursday, as the hay bails collapsed inside the barn, making them hard to get out to ensure no hot spots remain.

Whatcom County fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, VanderVeen said, adding that the barn was a total loss, but nobody was injured.
