Hiker airlifted after falling approximately 100 feet in Whatcom wilderness
A 20-year-old man from Silverdale had to be airlifted Saturday afternoon after he felt approximately 100 feet and was injured while hiking in the Table Mountain area near Artist Point.
Rescue teams from the Whatcom County Fire District 14 Kendall station and the Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council were notified at approximately 1 p.m. of the hiker’s fall, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Kevin Hester reported to The Bellingham Herald in an email..
The hiker suffered some broken bones, internal injuries and numerous cuts and bruises from the fall, Hester reported.
Rescue teams responded to his remote location and stabilized him, according to Hester, and it was determined that a helicopter hoist was needed to get him out of the area.
Snohomish County’s Search and Rescue and Air Unit helicopter, Snohawk 10, was called to the region, according to a Facebook post by Snohomish County Sheriff Adam Fortney.
The helicopter lifted the hiker at approximately 5 p.m. and took him to Providence Hospital in Everett for treatment of his injuries, Hester reported.
“Subject took a good tumble, suffered some fractures and multiple cuts bruises (and) contusions, but otherwise appeared stable,” Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council wrote in a Facebook post. “Big thanks to our friends at Sno County for the heli transport.”
