Alger teen without seat belt dies, Bellingham man injured in single-vehicle I-5 crash

A Bellingham man was among six people injured and an Alger teen was killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday evening along Interstate 5 just north of the Stillaguamish River in Snohomish County.

Marcus J. Kenny, 16, died at the scene along southbound I-5 near milepost 209 after a white 1999 Dodge Durango carrying seven people rolled several times in the median of the freeway at approximately 5:10 p.m. July 31, according to the Washington State Patrol report on the incident.

Bellingham resident Billy J. Fry, 31, was a passenger in the Durango, according to the report.

The Durango, which was driven by 35-year-old Andromeda N. Pizarro of Alger, was traveling southbound in the far left lane, when it attempted to merge into the center lane, the report stated. Pizarro noticed another car in the center lane, swerved to to the left to avoid that car, over corrected, and the Durango struck the barrier before rolling several times and ending up in the median.

Pizarro, Fry and four children 3-years old or younger and from Alger were all transported to Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett for treatment to injuries suffered in the crash, according to the report, which added that Kenny was the only one in the Durango not wearing a seat belt or properly restrained.

The left lane of both northbound and southbound I-5 was closed in the area while emergency crews responded, according to a tweet from Trooper Heather Axtman, who added there was a large traffic backup.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected in the crash, the State Patrol said.
