Wake up before your 5:30 a.m. alarm? This small earthquake may be the reason why

If you woke up a few minutes before your 5:30 a.m. alarm went off Wednesday morning, it may have been because of a small earthquake that hit just off the coast of Whidbey Island near Marrowstone.

A 2.5-magnitude quake shook the region at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

The epicenter was approximately 14.9 miles south of Oak Harbor, the USGS reports, and approximately 48 miles south southwest of downtown Bellingham, according to googlemaps.com.

It was measured approximately 13.6 miles deep, according to the USGS webpage on the quake.

No damage was reported, and nobody has reported feeling the quake throughout the San Juan Islands and southeast Vancouver Island on the USGS’ “Did You Feel It?” web page as of early Wednesday.

Quakes of less than magnitude 3.0 are common, and tens of thousands are reported worldwide every year, according to the USGS.

A quake of magnitude 1.0 to 3.0 is not felt except by a very few under especially favorable conditions, according to the USGS.
