Several hundred gather in Bellingham Tuesday evening to protest George Floyd killing
Several hundred people gathered Tuesday night, June 2, at Railroad Avenue and Holly Street in downtown Bellingham for a peaceful protest of the killing of George Floyd.
Others marched in protest Saturday, May 30, and a memorial continues to grow at the Bellingham Public Library downtown after a Friday, May 29, vigil. A small gathering of people were also present outside the library memorial Tuesday evening.
Protests have been held in dozens of cities after the killing in Minneapolis last week of Floyd, a 46-year-old black security guard, who died after his neck was pinned under a white police officer’s knee. The officer has been charged with murder.
In Bellingham, people chanted from the intersection’s four corners, “What do we want? Justice. When do we want it? Now.” They also held signs that read “Black Lives Matter,” “White Silence is Violence,” “End Police Brutality” and “No Justice, No Peace.”
At least one or two other protests are scheduled to take place in Bellingham, most of them downtown, Saturday afternoon, June 6. Details for most of those protests are still being finalized, according to social media posts.
