Whatcom fire crews respond to early-morning fire Wednesday near Silver Reef Casino

Fire crews responded to a Whatcom County mobile home fire early Wednesday, May 27, along Haxton Road just south of the Silver Reef Casino, according to social media posts by the Bellingham Fire Department.

Bellingham and Whatcom County Fire District 7 crews responded at 3:48 a.m. to the 4500 block of Haxton Way for the report of a structure fire, according to the PulsePoint app.

Firefighters arrived to find a mobile home “well involved” in fire, according to a 4:22 a.m. tweet by the Bellingham Fire Department.

Initial reports that residents of the mobile home may have been trapped, Bellingham Fire Captain Dave Pethick told The Bellingham Herald, but police on the scene notified firefighters that both residents escaped uninjured.

“It was pretty straight forward,” Pethick said. “Everyone was out of the building, and crews fought it defensively.”

A second tweet at 6:17 a.m. reported the crews were still working to put out hot spots. Though Haxton Way remained open, the tweet advised caution through the area, with fire apparatus still on the roadside.

Pethick said fire inspectors determined the structure was destroyed by the fire and have ruled the cause as accidental.
