Feel like you were being rocked to sleep last night? Early Friday quake may be reason

If you felt like you were being gently rocked to sleep last night, it may have been because of a small earthquake that hit shortly after midnight under the northeast corner San Juan Island.

A 2.7-magnitude quake shook the region at 12:15 a.m. Friday, May 15, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

The epicenter was approximately 6.4 miles northwest of Friday Harbor, the USGS reports, and approximately 32 miles south west of downtown Bellingham, according to googlemaps.com.

It was measured approximately 8.7 miles deep, according to the USGS webpage on the quake.

No damage was reported, but 74 people reported feeling the quake throughout the San Juan Islands and southeast Vancouver Island on the USGS’ “Did You Feel It?” web page. No Whatcom County residents had reported feeling it as of Friday morning.

Quakes of less than magnitude 3.0 are common, and tens of thousands are reported worldwide every year, according to the USGS.

A quake of magnitude 1.0 to 3.0 is not felt except by a very few under especially favorable conditions, according to the USGS.
