Detached shop in Bellingham’s Columbia neighborhood destroyed by fire Thursday

A detached shop in Bellingham’s Columbia neighborhood was destroyed by a fire believed to have started by a generator Thursday evening.

Bellingham Fire Department crews were called at 9:17 p.m. April 23 to the 2900 block of Lynn Street for the report of a structure fire, Captain Dave Pethick told The Bellingham Herald.

The first firefighters on scene found the detached shop “fairly well involved” in fire, Pethick said.

“Access was kind of difficult, because the structure was set back a ways,” Pethick said.

Firefighters mitigated the problem with two engines in front of the shop and two behind, Pethick said.

Crews had to battle the blaze defensively, and as a result, Pethick said the shop was a total loss.

An investigation into the fire determined the cause was accidental, Pethick said, as work with a generator that caught something on fire.

Nobody was injured in the fire, Pethick reported.

Cause of the fire corrected April 27, 2020.
