DNR firefighters hope weekend weather helps in battling Whatcom’s Porter Creek Fire
Washington Department of Natural Resources fire crews remain on scene fighting the Porter Creek Fire near Deming more than 36 hours after it first became visible across much of Whatcom County.
The fire, which has burned an estimate 80 acres of land above the Middle Fork of the Nooksack River since it was first reported Wednesday evening, April 15, is 60% contained, Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Jay Guthrie told The Bellingham Herald Friday, April 17.
Department of Natural Resources crews fighting the fire Friday include 55 firefighters and one helicopter, Guthrie said, as some hand crews were transferred from the Stanwood-Bryant Road fire.
Though it hasn’t yet, Guthrie said crews are hoping a change in the weather will aid completely knocking down the Porter Creek Fire.
“We’re hoping what is moving in Saturday produces some rain,” Guthrie said. “Unfortunately it will come in with some winds in front of it, so we’re trying to be prepared for that.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Guthrie said.
