Bellingham Public Works Department to start annual water flushing this week
Bellingham Public Works will perform yearly maintenance by flushing the city’s water system starting this week, according to a news release.
Crews will start flushing Monday, April 13, and be on the streets from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some areas will take longer to flush than others, so exact times not known, according to the release. Water may appear discolored and pressure reduced.
People are advised not to to wash white clothes or use hot water taps as the minerals could stain white clothes.
The flushing of the water mains is an annual maintenance task to prevent the buildup of mineral deposits on the pipes. Interim Assistant Director of Operations Mike Olinger said the services must still be performed despite the current coronavirus pandemic.
“Public Works has been operating at minimal staffing levels for the last three weeks to help with reducing the spread of COVID-19,” Olinger said. “Only emergency work has been performed over the last three weeks. Crews must return to normal maintenance procedures now to prevent any degradation of the water quality in the city’s drinking water system.”
People who experience prolonged periods of discolored water or low pressure, or who have any questions, should contact the Public Works Department at 360-778-7700.
