Leaking 1,000-gallon propane tank hospitalizes one, forces Whatcom road closure

One person was hospitalized as a precaution, and Smith Road near Guide Meridian north of Bellingham was briefly closed Thursday morning after a large propane tank leaked.

The leak was temporarily sealed, according to emergency radio broadcasts at the time, and the scene is now secure, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management Deputy Director John Gargett told The Bellingham Herald in an email..

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue and Whatcom County Fire District 7 crews were called at 9:35 a.m. Feb. 27 to the 100 block of West Smith Road for the report of a hazardous condition.

Crews found a 1,000-gallon propane tank releasing propane due to a valve failure, Gargett reported.

Deputies briefly shut down Smith Road while the tank was sealed, but it has since reopened after the scene determined secure.

One person was taken to St. Joseph hospital in Bellingham as a precaution, according to Gargett.
