Whatcom school bus involved in crash on Everson Goshen Road, but injuries are minor
A small Nooksack Valley School District school bus was involved in an a two-vehicle T-bone crash Tuesday afternoon along Everson Goshen Road, but no serious injuries were reported.
Whatcom County Fire District 1 units were called at 3:48 p.m. to the intersection of Everson Goshen Road and Central Road near Everson for an expanded traffic collision, according to the PulsePoint app. Follow up emergency broadcasts said the bus was T-boned by a van.
Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Sgt. Kevin Moyes told The Bellingham Herald there were seven children on the bus at the time of the collision, but all were wearing seat belts and none complained of any injuries.
In fact, nobody was taken to the hospital from the scene with injuries, Moyes said.
At 4:36 p.m., a second bus showed up and transported the students, who appeared to be elementary age, from the scene.
The bus had heavy damage to the right front, while the white box van that was involved had substantial damage to the front end and was towed from the scene.
A preliminary investigation showed that the van was traveling westbound on Central Road and ran a stop sign. The van tried to stop and slid into the bus, which was traveling northbound on Everson Goshen Road, Moyes told The Herald. Everson Goshen Road does not have a stop sign at the intersection, and the speed limit is 50 mph.
The investigation is ongoing, Moyes said, adding that it is not yet known if there will be any citations issued.
Northbound traffic on Everson Goshen Road was blocked while emergency personnel worked on the scene and was later diverted onto Central Road.
A woman in a car drove to the scene after the crash and handed snacks out her window for the kids.
