Driver hauling cattle cited after going into ditch, blocking Highway 9 Monday morning

A 19-year-old man was cited Monday morning after the truck and cattle trailer he was driving hit a road sign and went off the roadway on Highway 9 near the Whatcom-Skagit county line, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 24, Michael Lancaster was traveling southbound on Highway 9 at milepost 67, near Wickersham Road, when his 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 left the roadway for an unknown reason. The vehicle was hauling a trailer that had about 10 cattle in it. The vehicle hit a school bus traffic sign and both the truck and trailer got stuck in the ditch, blocking the entire roadway, Axtman said.

Both lanes of travel were blocked for approximately an hour before traffic was able to start alternating, according to Axtman and the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The driver and cattle were uninjured, Axtman said.

Lancaster was cited $187 for wheels off the roadway and a collision fee, Axtman said.

The incident was cleared shortly before 11:45 a.m., according to WSDOT.
