4.8 magnitude quake hits Northwest Friday afternoon

A 4.8 magnitude quake struck at 1:35 p.m. Friday off the Washington coast, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network reported.

It was centered about 35 northwest of Neah Bay at a depth of 16 miles, in Canadian waters approximately at the opening to the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

No tsunami warning was issued.

No damage was immediately reported, but Friday’s quake was felt by more than 300 people who used the USGS’ “Did You Feel It?” web page.

A quake of magnitude 4.0 to 4.9 is felt indoors by many, outdoors by few during the day. At night, some are awakened. Dishes, windows, doors disturbed or broken; walls make cracking sound, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Quakes of less than magnitude 3.0 are common, and tens of thousands are reported worldwide every year, according to the USGS.
