Child taken to hospital after being hit by car while sledding in Ferndale during storm

A child was taken to the hospital Thursday, Jan. 16, after he was hit by a car while sledding in Ferndale.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., Whatcom County Fire District 7 was called to the 5700 block of Hendrickson Avenue for the report of a child who was hit by a car, according to District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko.

Boyko said it appeared a boy was sledding down a hill, went over a jump and collided with a car that was traveling southbound on Hendrickson Avenue. He said the car was traveling at fairly low speeds due to the snowy and icy conditions, and that the driver didn’t have time to slow down or stop.

“It happened right in front of him and so quick,” Boyko said.

The child was awake and talking when medical personnel arrived on scene, and was taken to the hospital in stable condition for non-life-threatening injuries.

Boyko said it was hard to tell who hit who because the car was moving when the child was sledding down the hill.

Boyko said Ferndale police investigated and Riley Sweeney, a Ferndale police spokesperson, said the driver had no visibility and struck the sledder.

Sweeney said he didn’t have additional details as to whether the driver was cited, or the ages of the driver and child.

Whatcom County saw several inches of snow and windy weather last week, which prompted school closures.
