The PNW rumbles again, as another earthquake just struck closer to Bellingham
A week after a cluster of moderate earthquakes shook the waters off Vancouver Island, a smaller earthquake struck Tuesday morning much closer to Bellingham.
According to a U.S. Geological Survey release, a 2.3-magnitude temblor struck beneath the northeastern portion of San Juan Island and approximately 31 miles west-southwest of Bellingham.
The quake, which was recorded at 9:13 a.m. Dec. 31, was measured with a depth of 11.5 kilometers.
Only one person had reported feeling the earthquake within the first 15 minutes, according to the USGS, which asks people who did feel the quake to report it online.
Earthquakes of 2.5 magnitude or less can be detected by a seismograph but are usually not felt, according to the Michigan Tech website. The site reported there are approximately 900,000 earthquakes 2.5 of smaller per year.
