5.2 earthquake reported off Vancouver Island

(Another story with further developments about more earthquakes off the coast of Vancouver Island was published later Monday.)

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Monday morning of the west coast of Vancouver Island, according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.

It registered on seismographs at 8:44 a.m. PST at a depth of 6.2 miles.

No damage was reported initially from the quake, which was about 300 miles northwest of Bellingham.

A tsunami alert wasn’t issued, according to NOAA’s Tsunami Warning System.

A quake of magnitude 5.0 to 5.9 can move heavy furniture and cause plaster to fall. In large quakes at this range, damage is negligible in buildings of good design and construction; slight to moderate in well-built ordinary structures; and considerable in poorly built or badly designed structures, according to the USGS.
