This new trail has ‘beautiful sunsets over Semiahmoo Bay and the Strait of Georgia’

A short new trail is giving people a little more access to the Blaine waterfront.

The nearly 1/4-mile long section opened in early December at Blaine Harbor off Marine Drive.

The trail completes the link between the Blaine Harbor promenade and the boat launch, according to Andy Peterson, the Blaine harbormaster.

The Port of Bellingham oversees Blaine Harbor.

“This new trail is a welcome addition to the waterfront trail system at Blaine Harbor and Blaine’s Marine Park and offers unique views of the harbor, wildlife and beautiful sunsets over Semiahmoo Bay and the Strait of Georgia,” Peterson said.

The trail’s surface is hard, compacted gravel. That means it can be used by walkers, runners, bicycles, strollers and wheelchairs, according to Peterson.

It’s already popular.

“We have noticed quite a bit of use from the regulars that walk our waterfront trails,” Peterson said.

If you just want to explore the new section, you can access that from Gate 1 at 211 Marine Drive.

“However, there is a network of walking trails that connect between the city of Blaine’s Marine Park and the Port’s Blaine Harbor Promenade and the Jorgensen Pier at the end of Marine Drive,” Peterson said. “I would encourage folks to explore all the trails.”

Peterson said the trail was part of a $3.4 million contract with Dawson Construction to install stormwater improvements and build a new web locker for commercial fishers mooring at Blaine Harbor.
