Whatcom pedestrian hospitalized with injuries after being struck by car

A Whatcom County woman was transported to St. Joesph’s hospital with serious injuries after she reportedly jumped in front of a car and was struck Thursday night along Lummi Shore Road.

The 23-year-old Bellingham woman was in the 2500 block of Lummi Shore Road at approximately 8:11 p.m. Dec. 12, as a silver 1999 Ford Escort driven by a 33-year-old Bellingham man was headed southbound along the road, according to the Washington State Patrol release on the incident.

The woman is in critical condition, according to hospital spokesperson Bev Mayhew.

The woman jumped in front of the car, the report said, and was struck. She came to rest along the center line.

The Escort was damaged in the collision, but the release said it was able to be driven from the scene.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to have been involved, the State Patrol said, but the cause remains under investigation.

The incident occurred less than 48 hours after a Bellingham man was struck and killed Tuesday while walking in the lanes of traffic along Interstate 5 near the Iowa Street exit.
