Blaine man in critical condition at Harborview after being hit by vehicle along I-5
A 26-year-old Blaine man was transported to Harborview Medical Center early Saturday after he had a single-car crash on Interstate 5 near the Alger exit, got out of his car and was struck by another vehicle.
Peter I. Kovtun was driving his white 2014 BMW 428 at approximately 2:05 a.m. Dec. 7 southbound on I-5 near milepost 241 when he lost control, stuck a barrier on the right side of the highway and came to rest in the right lane, according to the Washington State Patrol news release on the crash.
Kovtun exited and was standing alongside the BMW when he was struck by a black 2018 Toyota Highlander driven by Fu D. Ren, 61, of Vancouver, B.C., the report said.
Kovtun was transported to Harborview, where the hospital’s nursing supervisor told The Bellingham Herald he was in critical condition Saturday morning.
The State Patrol release cited speeds too fast for conditions as the cause of the collision.
The Washington State Department of Transportation tweeted that the crash closed all southbound lanes until 4:41 a.m. Saturday.
