Whatcom commission’s newest member has planning experience

The Whatcom County Council on Tuesday, June 9, appointed Kelvin Barton to fill a vacant seat on the nine-member county Planning Commission.

Barton, 59, is a retiree living in Birch Bay who worked for more than 30 years in government. His responsibilities included the type of planning work done by the commission, according to his résumé. He replaces ex-Ferndale Assistant City Administrator Sam Taylor, who sat on the Planning Commission for seven months before resigning to take a job in California.

Barton’s term in the volunteer post expires in January 2018.

The only other applicant for the vacancy, Michael Bersch of Ferndale, withdrew his name for consideration on Monday, June 8, without giving a reason.
