A former board member for the Whatcom Family YMCA is its new CEO, the organization has announced.
Bill Ziels was a member of the Whatcom Family YMCA’s board for 10 years when he stepped aside to serve as interim CEO after Dan Powell resigned the top post in October. Powell had served a little more than a year.
Ziels had served as treasurer while on the Whatcom Y’s board, and has a 30-year career in senior management positions.
“Bill brings significant business acumen as well as a natural instinct to collaborate with other organizations to fulfill the mission of the YMCA. We look forward to working with him in furthering the YMCA’s impact in the Whatcom community,” said Kathy Hughes, board president for the Whatcom Family YMCA.

Ziels was added to the slate of candidates as the Y looked for a new CEO.
“As we went through the CEO search process, we realized that we had a huge resource in our interim CEO,” Hughes said. “Our conclusion was the best candidate was the one we had in place.”
